May 17th Conductors’ Reception

On May 17, 2010 the Board of the WCYO hosted a Conductor’s Reception to offer the community and families of WCYO students an opportunity to meet the new conductor of the Youth Orchestra of the WCYO, Mrs. Anna Maria Miller, and the existing conductor of the Junior Orchestra, Mrs. Melissa Edgington. Several of the students who came out performed the Solo and Ensemble pieces that they had prepared through their schools or private instructors. Thank you to Jill Fetters, a parent of WCYO musicians, who provided accompaniment to many of these students … it was SO much fun!

EMI Ensemble

In April-May of 2010 six of the top WCYO string players were invited to participate in a pilot small string ensemble program which was sponsored by EMI.  This group was lead by ensemble coach, Amy Helman, a local private instructor.  The students learned how to self-direct which requires a lot of cooperation and strong listening skills and the flexibility to move with the group.  Amy did a masterful job showing them how to accomplish this.  There was lots of laughter during practice sessions and lots of anxiety as the recording session date approached.  This was a new experience for all of these students!  EMI’s technician, Bryan Raitt, was Mr. Calm as he lead the students through the recording process … thank you, Bryan!  And thank you, Holly Whaley at EMI who secured the recording studio for this pilot program.  Check out the sound bites from the recording!!  You’ll be delighted!
This was an experience to repeat for sure.  We’re making plans already to take a step deeper into a small ensemble program, so stay tuned … you may be part of the next EMI Ensemble!

A Night on Broadway!

The May 9 concert, A Night on Broadway!, was a night to relish! What a delightful event. Well done to all the musicians and vocalists! Well done to all the parents who helped with the amazing reception that followed! Thank you to all who participated and supported the evening and a special thanks to Lipscomb University who donated the use of their excellent performance hall. It was so wonderful to be able to offer the evening to those affected by the floods who were being housed on Lipscomb’s campus.
